Army to Vacate Kargil Lower Plateau after 70 Years

Evacuation process to be completed in 6 months

Kargil: The Indian army has agreed to vacate a vast plateau in Kargil town after years of persistent public demand thus paving the way for expansion of overpopulated mountainous town in the Himalayas north of Kashmir.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between the Ladakh Autonomous Hill development Council (LAHDC) Kargil and the Army to evacuate the 1,700-kanal (210-acre) Kargil Lower Plateau.

Also called the Khurbathang Lower Plateau the area will be developed as a planned township, helping ease congestion in Kargil town.The army was using the plateau as a firing range, apart from operational and logistical facilities since 1948.

As per the MoU, substitute land shall be provided to the Army near Maratha Unit Kurbathang and Mulbekh area.

An official statement reads that the MoU also outlines that the Army shall complete the process of evacuation within 6 months time.

The CEC, LAHDC, Kargil and the GOC, 8 Mountain Division who signed the MOU said that it is a landmark decision which was a long pending demand of the people of Kargil and will pave way for the establishment of a new and well planned township in Kargil with all modern amenities under Smart City Project.

Local leader Sajjad Kargili hailed the decision calling it a “good news for Kargil.”
